After the Dinner

May 04, 2006

Poking fun at the President of the United States is not fun - this is why the blogsphere has seen some lively discussions in the last few days about Colbert since the White House Correspondents’ Association’ dinner. Was it or wasn’t he funny? Did he or didn’t he cross the line?

It was quite noticable even when I watched the video the first time that there were awkward moments of silence during the 20-minutes plus show. was the first word that came to my mind and I used it as title of my post. “Hilarious” only came seconds later. No wonder that some who had attended the dinner wrote that the room was only half filled with laughter (and those who laughed probably had a few pints too many).

It took a real brave soul to point out to the Emperor that he had no clothes while at the same time revealing the nakedness of everyone else inside that room. Colbert might have talked funny but matters of substantial global significance could hardly be sources of laughter.
