Silkworm
August 03, 2006
Lately, there seems to be a renewed interest in this little ancient creature called Silkworm. It’s not about the deadly missile we make which somehow, uwittingly, find its way into the fight between two abused kids, nor is it about the much sought after fabric we export.
It’s about one of my grandma’s favorite dishes – pan fry silkworm pupae, although this time they are making it specially for our astronauts.
Eating worms may sound gross but they do make up some regular dishes in many parts of the world. As for the fear factor, a worm dish may have a long way to go comparing to Balut (duck egg with live baby duckling inside). In fact, Korea and Japan are two major export market for our silkworm cocoon. Beondegi is a popular snack.
And yes we do export some colorful varieties.
