Delusion

December 22, 2006

I have lately been re-reading “Story of the Red Chamber” - 红楼梦 (also referred to as “The Story of a Stone” - 石头记 ) - one of the four novels collectively known as the Four Greatest Classical Novels in Chnese literature.(The other three are: Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West). In its preface, it reads:

假作真時真亦假,無為有處有還無

(When delusion becomes reality, reality becomes delusion. When failure is taken as success, success becomes failure.)

This seems to be a perfect explaination as to why the Bush regime can continue to live and operate so comfortably in a reality vaccum.

It is a horrifying possibility as Seymour Hersh wrote in his “Chain of Command” -

“There are many who believe George Bush is a liar, a President who knowingly and deliberately twists facts for political gain. But lying would indicate an understanding of what is desired, what is possible, and how best to get there. A more plausible explanation is that words have no meaning for this President beyond the immediate moment, and so he believes that his mere utterance of the phrases makes them real. It is a terrifying possibility”.

The madness keeps creating more misery, destruction and hatred across the Middle East and beyond and yet no one seems to be able to do anything about it. It’s sad for the American people and its sad for the rest of us.
